Coronavirus: Renters in Canada increasingly at risk of losing homes amid pandemic


Global News shows that the dangerous Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated Canada's affordable housing crisis, indeed. 

While evictions were put on hold during the first wave in most provinces, when summer rolled around the certain ban was lifted and it led to a surge of online eviction hearings. 

Now, a growing number of renters are at risk of losing their important homes. Farah Nasser looks at the unprecedented eviction crisis gaining momentum in this country.

Eviction is the removal of a tenant from rental property by the landlord. In some jurisdictions it may also involve the removal of persons from certain premises that were foreclosed by a mortgagee.

    Ontario has issued its second moratorium on residential evictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, but critics say the wording of the emergency order has created more confusion and may leave some tenants vulnerable.

    On Tuesday, Premier Doug Ford announced that the province would be suspending enforcement of residential eviction orders "so people can stay home safely."
